This is necessary to ensure that your photos, scans and other dot matrix images have the right resolution (resolution does not matter for Post Script vector images, they will be printed at the maximum resolution of the output device). Some standard output formats are listed below.

Web ‍ page

72dpi. When you're resizing an image for a web page, it's best to ignore the PrintSize part of Photoshop's ResizeImage dialog and just work with pixels.

Newspaper ‍ paper

The scanning resolution is 125~170dpi. For printed images, the resolution is set to 1.5 to 2 times of the lpi. (2x will give you more flexibility when zooming in on the image). 85lpi for newspaper printing.

Magazines/publicity materials

Scanning resolution was used at 300dpi because magazines are printed with 133 or 150lpi.

High Quality books

The scanning resolution used was 350 to 400dpi, as most beautifully printed books are printed with 175 to 200lpi.

Wide format printing

The scanning resolution used is 75 to 150dpi. For large format images viewed from a distance (such as posters), low resolution is acceptable, and low scale mainly depends on the viewing distance: the menu behind the cash register must have higher resolution than a banner hung from the roof.
