The image file for print output must be in CMYK color mode, not RGB mode. The process from RGB mode to CMYK mode is what we call the color separation process. Although this operation is very simple, but really to make the color separation meet the actual conditions of printing, you must do the color separation parameters in advance. The setting of color separation parameters is essentially part of the color management process, and Photoshop has integrated the setting of color separation parameters into color management since version 5.0.

Launch Photoshop and open Edit. Color Settings command, in the workspace Settings to set the CMYK workspace, you can choose Photoshop built-in CMYK color space, you can also according to the actual print output conditions to set the user.

Grayscale space setting

It has a great effect on the value converted from color mode to GrayScale mode. For example, for the same RGB color block R75G128B56, when Dot Gain is 20%, the value K converted to GrayScale mode is 65%; When Dot Gain is 25%, the value K converted to GrayScale mode is 60%. When Dot Gain is 30%, the value K converted to GrayScale mode is 54%.

Setting of spot color space

It directly affects the display color of spot color images. For example, when Dot Gain is 20%, the spot color of a certain Dot percentage is 55% is brighter, and when Dot Gain is changed to 30%, the color is darker.

Color management solution

To manage colors more efficiently through your system and application, you can embed ICC color description files in your image files. When embedded, the ICC Profile can describe the correct color space for the image file to ensure color consistency. When another application opens an image embedded in the ICC Profile, it automatically determines and decides what to do if the relevant Settings are inconsistent with the embedded ones. In previous versions of Photoshop, the work of embedding ICC profiles was done by the "Profile Settings", but Photoshop7.0 has changed this to do the work of embedding ICC profiles when storing image files. If it is an RGB image, it is embedded according to the Settings of the above RGB space; if it is a CMYK image, it is embedded according to the Settings of the CMYK space.

When opening an image file in another application, what if the ICC Profile embedded in the image does not match the software Settings, or the image does not have an ICC Profile embedded? That's what Color Management Polices is all about. In the edit -> The color setting dialog box contains the content of color management policies. The relevant Settings are shown in Figure 6, where RGB, CMYK and Gray images can be set respectively, but the basic content is the same.
