Notes on page numbering in printing of books and periodicals

1. When arranging the page numbers of books and periodicals, the first thing to do is to figure out the binding method of books and periodicals. There are various binding methods such as paper binding, saddle stitching, hardcover stitching, glue binding, sewing machine seam, etc., which are absolutely different when arranging the page numbers of books and periodicals, and the page numbers of books and periodicals should be arranged according to their different binding methods. For example, the pages and codes of 16 open saddle stitched books and 16 open paper bound books are different. Saddle stitching is to fold all the pages of the book together, and then use a stapler to staple two nails in the middle of the spine, while paper binding is to fold a stack of 16 folio three-fold books in page order. The posts are arranged individually, then matched in sequence to form a book, and then placed flat on a stapler for binding into a book.

2. Before arranging the page numbers of books and periodicals, the production department of the printing house should accurately calculate the number of pages of a book according to the printing and distribution list of books and periodicals of the publishing house, and convert them into the number of printed sheets. For example, a 16-fold folio sheet is 30% off, and the front and back sets account for 16 pages; a 16-fold folio is 20% off, and the front and back pages are 8 pages; ; 32 folio printed sheets are folded in three, and the front and back reprints account for 16 pages. The total number of pages divided by the number of pages per sheet equals the number of sheets.

3. When arranging the page numbers of books and periodicals, the influence of the thickness of the books and periodicals on the binding quality and page numbering should be grasped. For example, when printing books and periodicals with a size of 32 open, thin paper below 60g/m2 can be folded in half; and 70g/m2, 80g/m2 book paper, offset paper, and even coated paper above 60g/m2 Due to the thicker paper used, the requirements of printing, binding and other processes are taken into account when arranging the page numbers. It is obviously not feasible to fold the printed sheets in four. It is very large, and the staggered front and back are inconsistent, which affects the beauty of books and periodicals, and damages the quality of printing and binding of books and periodicals. Therefore, for the thick paper books above 60g/m2, when arranging the page numbers of the books, it is necessary to minimize the folding times of the signatures, so as to control the thickness of the signatures, and avoid the deviation of the page number and the image and text of the edition, which will affect the appearance.

4. Experienced publishing houses and periodicals and magazines try to use whole numbers of sheets when arranging book pages, or add one and a half sheets, in order to facilitate the printing and binding of books and periodicals. However, in actual work, there are often cases where there are 0.75, 0.8, 0.9, etc. sheets left at the end. So how to arrange the remaining scattered sheets is the most appropriate? If the sporadic sheets are bound in paperback, perfect binding, hardcover, and other binding methods, do not compile the remaining sporadic sheets at the end of a book. It is better to arrange the sporadic pages that are not enough for one sheet in the last complete sheet. In the front, this can prevent the book binding due to sporadic pages, resulting in loose pages and page drop failures. For the sporadic printed sheets or loose pages of the saddle-stitched book that is not enough for one printed sheet, it is better to insert it in the middle of the book, so that the scattered pages of the book can be avoided when the book is placed at the spine of the stitching.

5. When compiling page numbers of books and periodicals, it is required to have clear handwriting, so that it is easy for make-up operators to read them clearly. For each printed sheet, as well as the sporadic printed sheets that are not enough for one printed sheet, be sure to write the page number sequence number, book title, etc. on the first page of the printed sheet after unstacking. Press, preface, etc., must be marked clearly and accurately on the specific position of the page numbering, so as to avoid mistakes and mistakes in the imposition.

6. During offset printing, the plate should be installed on the plate cylinder, the machine should be adjusted, and the positions such as the head, foot, and incision of the book should be reserved. Accidents in the printing quality of books and periodicals caused by misplacement and reversal of the imposition. When binding, the pages should also be strictly arranged according to the page numbers of the compiled books, and bound into volumes.
