One-time" smart packaging solution

A report by AIPIA’s Brazilian partner Internet of Packaging journal, Brazil’s national research company Embrapa and Brazilian startup Siena have created a software package that can provide proactive and intelligent solutions in one go Program.

With software developed by Siena for smartphones, QR codes embedded in Embrapa packaging, and low-cost sensors with nanotechnology and artificial intelligence, this solution is not only beneficial to companies in the supply chain, but also to end consumers, ensuring nearby markets Even the safety and quality of exported food. RFID can be integrated into this solution.

Embrapa researcher Marcos David explained that the technology can track and monitor the maturity of fruits that are ripe after harvest. He explained: "Innovation is part of an open innovation project carried out with Siena." The test was done with mango, papaya and banana, but the sensor can be applied to several other fruits".

This color sensor called Yva-which means fruit in Brazil's native language Tupi-Guarani-has a label that can change the color, but through a smartphone and Siena software, it can display fruit Status: Green, mature or consumed in the past. The QR code next to the nano sensor tag shows identification and tracking information, including where the fruit was harvested.

Yva is a one-off, entering the market at a price of less than 2 cents per kilogram of fruit. It detects the release of ethylene, which is a natural hormone in the fruit ripening process. When it reacts with powdered nanoparticles, the fruit changes color as it ripens.

This change is achieved through a mobile application whose functions include displaying when the fruit is ripe, when it is suitable for consumption, or when it is best for consumers.

Nano sensors can be installed in plastic packaging or fruit boxes for different market segments, including fruit producers and processors, wholesalers and retailers, associations, cooperatives, and export companies. The focus of the sensor's research and development is to reduce the loss and waste of food in the production chain. Brazil loses 26 million tons of food every year, enough to feed 13 million people.

Currently, the global fruit market is worth more than 130 billion U.S. dollars per year. Developers said that with this technology, through monitoring and quality management, it is possible to increase the difference of products on the market, thereby improving efficiency and competitiveness.

New concept of active and smart packaging solutions

AIPIA is an organization dedicated to promoting active and smart packaging. Its member companies include manufacturers of smart labels and inks, anti-counterfeiting technology, shelf extension, NFC/RFID, temperature and humidity control, etc. It is a platform for brands to interact with suppliers.

Over the years, the association has held active and smart packaging forums in Europe, Japan, the United States, and China to promote business opportunities for the packaging industry.

The services provided by AIPIA CHINA to members mainly include: resource docking, solutions, brand marketing and promotion.

Headquartered in the Netherlands, AIPIA has more than 1,600 member companies around the world. The Active and Smart Packaging Summit is held every year to provide guests participating in the summit with top-level speeches and demonstrations on the implementation of active and smart packaging and technological development.
