The environmental problems in the binding process of Kids Reading Books after printing

Binding is one of the important post-printing processes. At present, books in our country are mainly by wireless binding technology, and the adhesives used are also mostly EVA hot melt adhesives, but there are also some environmental problems in the EVA hot melt itself and its use process.

First of all, from the point of view of EVA hot melt adhesive itself, in addition to ethylene, vinyl acetate, rosin, paraffin and other main components, in order to prevent the bonding performance of EVA hot melt adhesive at high temperature change, but also to add some antioxidants.

At present, there are two kinds of antioxidants in use, one is the pollution-free pentaerythritol propionate esters, and the other is the di-tert-butylp-methylphenol substances with certain pollution. At present, there is no standard explicitly requiring that the latter substance cannot be used in EVA hot melt adhesive.

The author once went to a joint venture adhesives manufacturing enterprise. When the author asked the boss whether there was methylphenol in the adhesives, the boss answered no, but when he asked a worker, he said yes. It can be seen that the composition of EVA hot melt adhesive has not attracted the attention of adhesives manufacturers. But we should be clear that almost all paperback bound books now use EVA hot melt adhesive. The use of EVA hot melt adhesive reaches nearly 20,000 tons every year, involving more than 5 billion books and more than 4 billion books. Therefore, the environmental protection of EVA hot melt adhesive itself must attract the attention of the society, and the relevant testing standards need to be improved.

Secondly, there are also environmental problems in the use of EVA hot melt adhesive in printing enterprises.

(1) Preheating the rubber barrel and using the rubber barrel without exhaust system, resulting in EVA hot melt rubber heating (temperature should be above 150 degrees Celsius) after the exhaust containing synthetic resin fume, carbon dioxide and other harmful substances in the workshop, at any time to harm the health of workers, pollution of the environment.

(2) The amount of glue in the preheating barrel is too much, EVA hot melt glue is heated repeatedly, light will lead to colloidal aging deterioration, viscosity, strength decline, heavy colloidal carbonization smoke, carbon dioxide discharge, powder fire, resulting in irreparable consequences.

(3) Do not clean the rubber bucket according to the standard provisions or do not clean the rubber bucket at all. This practice will not only cause the gel impure caused by the adhesive precipitation, but also affect the bonding strength, and make the adhesive remaining on the edge of the rubber bucket carbonization, powder and cause a fire.

For the above phenomenon, printing enterprises should strictly follow the CY/T40-2007 "Requirements and Testing Standards for the Use of EVA Hot melt Adhesive for Book Binding" formulated by the National Technical Committee of Printing Standardization, and correctly use EVA hot melt adhesive.

Of course, in addition to the environmental problems in the laminating and binding process mentioned above, there are also problems in the post-press link such as excessive noise of equipment, strong pollution of some cover materials, ineffective research and development and promotion of new green post-press technology, and insufficient understanding of the importance of green post-press by relevant leaders, departments and printing enterprises.

Although some problems, such as the research and development of environmental protection materials, involve many industries, we cannot directly and timely solve, but most of the problems can be solved by improving industry standards, strengthening industry monitoring, improving standardized operation level, etc. Therefore, the relevant management departments of the industry should strengthen the guidance of printing enterprises, strengthen the understanding of the importance of green post-press of printing enterprises, so that they really put green post-press on the agenda, let our people more healthy, let our environment more beautiful!
